Anton & Natalia: A Heartfelt Wedding
Anton and Natalia’s wedding in Yekaterinburg is a warm, personal story about the couple and the people around them. I photographed it with attention to their interactions and the moments between the formal events. Portraits and evening reportage belong to the same sequence, showing different sides of the celebration.
The people around the couple
In the documentary parts of a wedding, I watch how people spend time together. A conversation, a shared reaction or someone moving closer to another person can tell you something that a formal photograph cannot. Those moments deserve attention even when the programme has paused.
For me, a heartfelt wedding story depends on giving those relationships room in the photographs. The couple remain central, but the people who came to celebrate with them also need to feel present. That is the approach behind this series: following what is happening and noticing details without continually interrupting the day.
Help with portraits
Natural photographs do not require a couple to know how to pose. During portraits, I help with light, position and movement. A small adjustment can make someone more comfortable and give the photograph a clearer composition.
The amount of direction changes with the situation. During conversation or an emotional exchange, my priority is to let it continue. During a planned portrait, I can offer a suggestion and give the couple time to settle into it. Looking through the series shows how those two ways of working sit together.
The evening has its own atmosphere
The later photographs include guests, dancing and the changing light of the celebration. That part of the gallery is useful to look at separately when choosing a photographer: working with movement and evening lighting asks different things of the camera and the person behind it.
I adapt my use of available light, flash and compact continuous light to the scene. The aim is to keep people readable while preserving the atmosphere of the evening. You can find photographs from Anton and Natalia’s celebration in my guide to wedding photography in dark venues, where I explain those choices in more detail.
Planning a similarly personal wedding
Start by identifying the people and parts of the day you most want to remember. Allow time for family portraits as well as ordinary conversation, and include the evening in your coverage if dancing and time with guests matter to you.
If being photographed feels unfamiliar, read my guide for couples who do not enjoy posing. You can also explore Dima and Lena’s documentary wedding or send me your date and plans to discuss your own coverage.
